25 Stroke Trees - 1993

One of the 25 Stroke TreesThe Black-E was launched in May 1968.  These workshops were both a celebration of our 25th Anniversary in 1993 and an acknowledgement of The Blackie’s base in Liverpool’s China Town (the oldest China Town in Europe).  The challenge, as ever, was to create a workshop which was “simple enough for the simplest, and sophisticated enough for the most sophisticated”.  The materials chosen were black ink and Chinese brushes on A3 size paper.  The challenge was to produce a tree  -  recognisably different from any other of the other trees produced  -  using exactly 25 brush strokes.  Participants generally experimented with variants before commencing on their final work.  The result was the creation of a family of works which we call 25 Stroke Trees.  Above left is one example and below are many more.
