Saltaire Dance is no more than a virtually undetectable small blip on the profile of the recently established National Curriculum for schools. It can surely only be because this Curriculum has been created by a non-dancing quango.

Sakoba was founded in 1987 by Bode Lawal (dancer and choreographer) and Ola Adeniran (musician and writer).  Sakoba is Yoruba for 'new dawn'' or 'new beginnings'.  The name reflects the Company's commitment to creating new work in Britain drawing on traditional African sources, developing character and creativity  within African dance in the UK and promoting the tradition of story telling theatre.

‘Black Dance’ (to use those two words in the most simple and direct of ways) first took root at The Blackie in 1969 through the twice weekly (Junior and Senior) Soul Discos created in partnership with Radio Doom Discoteque and Nova Express Lightshow.  The youngsters participating in these Discos  -  principally from Liverpool’s African-Caribbean communities in L8 and L1  -  engaged in social dancing to the music of African-American artists and groups James Brown, The Temptations, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Gladys Knight a

A series of dance workshops led by Di Davies, Dennis Greenwood, Margie Katz, Marie Riollano from the London School of Contemporary Dance.   These were advanced students who had come  to perform in Inferno and run dance workshops.

The Idea To paraphrase the Press Release for Going Solo; Solo dancing may be a solitary art form  but the Blackie celebrated this art form, over the 5 days of Going Solo, in a very sociable way.
